Vimeo Acquires Echograph App and Joins the Animated GIF Party

Mobile apps that allow you to create animated GIFs have been popular for a while now, and with the recent launch of Vine, it's pretty clear that the trend is showing no signs of slowing down. Websites and startups that can't keep up with the web will struggle, which is probably why Vimeo decided it was high time to acquire iOS GIF-maker app Echograph.

Echograph is an app that lets users trim a video into a short, five- second animation. It's nearly identical to Cinemagram. Both apps require you to use your finger to paint the selected animation to merge both video and image. Users will be able to share their own animated images online through Vimeo.

Vimeo has about 15 million users, but it's less known for its mobile platforms (it only just recently launched an iPad app) and used more via the real web - on a laptop or desktop computer. Still, Echograph integration is something that Vimeo's very strong, loyal and artistic user base can probably really look forward to trying out.
