MySpace Data Availability Becomes MySpaceID

Tuesday December 9, 2008
MySpaceID offers the same basic functionality as Facebook Connect and Google Friend Connect

Less than a week after Facebook Connect and Google Friend Connect were released into the wild, MySpace has announced that it's web identification service is getting a name change. MySpace Data Availability shall henceforth be known as MySpaceID. Probably a good idea because Facebook and Google were really winning the best-name-for-the-service battle.

MySpace also announced some new features for their MySpaceID service, including the ability to send infromation back to your MySpace account, which is similar to what Facebook Connect does. If you are curious as to how it all works, simply head over to Flixster and open up a new account using your MySpaceID.

While it's good to see that MySpace isn't just going to roll over and play dead, the good money is on either Google or Facebook becoming the defacto standard. As for me, I'd place my bets on Google based on the simple fact that -- believe it or not -- not everyone is interested in joining Facebook or even joining any social network, but just about everyone on the web finds search engines to be useful.

I agree, so many people who could care less about social networking, are in love with the services Google provides, but I also understand there is going to be some sort of compatibility between MyspaceID and Google Friend Connect which will benefit one or both of those services, and not so much Facebook Connect as it stands.
