Yahoo Joins OpenSocial While Facebook Still Refuses
Google, Yahoo, and MySpace's parent company News Corp. announced yesterday that they were forming a non-profit organization called called the OpenSocial Foundation. This organization will drive the OpenSocial initiative with the stated goal of public involvement.
OpenSocial is an important step in driving a stable development platform for social networks. It creates a standard that allows widgets to be deployed across social networks with much more ease, which translates to bigger and better widgets that can be used on your social network.
Among the social networks committed to OpenSocial are MySpace, Hi5, Friendster, Ning and LinkedIn. However, Facebook has remained aloof on the issue. Webware reports that Facebook Senior Platform Manager Dave Morin was put on the spot about Facebook's stance at the Snap Summit 2.0.
When asked about Facebook's so-called commitment to openness while refusing to support OpenSocial, Morin said, "It's pretty interesting. We've made some pretty interesting commitments to openness as well."
It sounds like someone has been studying how to become a politician.
