Yahoo Goes Social With Yahoo Buzz

Tuesday February 26, 2008

Yesterday, Yahoo Buzz was an article about SNL's comeback from the writer's strike. Today, Yahoo Buzz contains a list of stories and lets users vote to raise a story's buzz factor.

Sound familiar?

But Yahoo Buzz isn't just a Digg clone. In fact, it begs the question: Is Yahoo Buzz a social news site?

Feel free to weigh in with your opinion.

(1) Holly Helmstetter says:

The rating system for comments on Yahoo Buzz squelches dissenting voices by hiding those comments after 5 negative ratings. So unless you click on all the “hidden” comments, you see only one side of the discussion. Furthermore, the mechanism of the rating system consistently rejects efforts to rate a comment, by simply not registering the rating, or by giving one or more ratings in the opposite of what a person tries to vote. The “dissenting” voice is any progressive comment (swiftly taken out of view, while conservative comments get artifically elevated ratings. In other words, it’s one-sided and crooked. I got fed up with trying to have a balanced discussion there. Leave it to the people who want to pretend THEIR opinions are the ONLY opinions.

Hi,

I tried Yahoo buzz. I found that not many people use that for social networking on articles. The only thing I found are republicans bashing Obama on everything he dose.

I recommend Digg.com. Has 20-30 more users, so it is very popular. I got a bad feeling yahoo buzz will die off.

(3) Drew says:

Yahoo’s “Buzz” comments section is a glimpse into a dark, barely literate, hate and anger filled world.

Sometime in the next 12 months, someone will win a Pulitzer Prize for uncovering Republican’s slimy “astroturfing” and “sock puppetry” in New Media.

(4) Janet Rodriguez says:

What baloney – what happened to the vote in favor of or vote against. This new buzz up doesn’t provide a voice for those opposed to or turned off by media coverage.

(5) Connie Sutcliffe says:

I find a lot of hate-filled, non-substantiated statements on Buzzed. I find racial slurs and personal bashing towards others who disagree with their comments. Some of these racial statements sound like they are from Neo Nazzi members, not so much Republicans because even though I’m not a fan of the GOP lately, I don’t believe this is a characteristic of the party. I haven’t looked at other sites, but I expect that they are just as vulnerable to attract these sorts of people. Such is the way of the Internet.
