From , former About.com Guide

Wikia, formerly known as Wikicities, is a wiki farm started by one of the founders of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales. With that type of pedigree, Wikia has a lot to live up to, and it does a good job of meeting those expectations.

Simple, easy-to-use, intuitive editing features and the ability to quickly add a new page make participating on Wikia a breeze. And because a single login allows you to join any of the thousands of community wikis, you can easily jump from subject to subject.

Wikia - Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Strong wiki farm with good user participation
  • Single login for thousands of wikis
Cons
  • No support for Open ID
  • Search feature sometimes brings up pages for requested sites

Guide Review - Wikia

Wikia is a wiki farm with subjects ranging from books to politics to health to finance. The sheer number of subjects means there is something for everyone, and if you can't find what you are interested in through the wiki hubs, the main Wikia site allows you to search among all of the hosted wiki sites.

The process of editing pages and adding new pages is simple, using a markup language similar to other wikis. Because it is a wiki farm, you can use the same account across multiple wikis to contribute to the site under the same name.

As expected from the founder of Wikipedia, Wikia has a strong community of users actively participating in the wiki farm. In 2005, Wikia celebrated its 100th wiki, while in September of 2007, Wikia launched its own gaming network with wikis that covered over 400 games including popular games like World of Warcraft, Mass Effect, and Halo.

Wikia doesn't accept OpenID, but the sign up process is simple. Search performance is good, with results popping up as soon as you hit the button, though some results are a little puzzling such as links to pages requesting a wiki for the subject of the search. After all, if I am looking for information on a subject, I really don't need to know that other people want information too. But, that is pretty minor in the large scheme of things.

The Worst Website I Have Ever Visited, Member Musical188

Wikia has to be the worst wikifarm, but not only that, the worst WEBSITE, I have ever visited. First, most users who registered there are rude and unwelcoming to newcomers. Second, there is a volunteer named ""Charitwo"" who is impertinent, thinks his actions are always right and the actions of others are always wrong, and is bossy. When he blocks users, he disables email so blocked users have NO way of communicating with the blocker. Third, the new skin is unprofessional and was designed not because of the staff wanted to make a new fresh look for Wikia, but to make Wikia unfriendly to edit. The editing and reading space was greatly reduced. Also, it made more room for advertisements. Wikia only wanted ONE thing: MONEY. Now they globally block users because they move their wikis to other wiki farms due to the skin change. The staff will never listen to what users have to say. They say ""criticism is appreciated"" but they NEVER listen to whatever criticism people write. Too many other concerns, but they are all summed up with, STAY AWAY! Would like a wiki farm, visit ShoutWiki or Wikkii - NOT Wikia.
