It's amazing just how much the web has changed in the past ten years. Web trends such as Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0 and Cloud Computing have revolutionized the way we use the Internet, turning it from a service that we use to extract information into a central part of our daily lives. We use it to keep up with our friends and family, store our vacation photos, make cheap long distance phone calls, watch feature-length movies, play inside of virtual worlds and even carry it around with us in our pocket when we are on the go.
So how do you pick out the best web trends of the decade? What makes one great web idea better than the next? What were the best web innovations?
No doubt, a hard task made even more difficult considering how so much of the modern web evolved over time. Does social networking make the list? It certainly dominates our time spent on the web, but the first social networks popped up last decade. And no doubt, the biggest single change to the web is the mass availability of broadband access, which is really what allows us to use the web in such a wide variety of ways. But again, broadband access is something that began last decade and evolved over time.
So to determine what deserved a place on the list, I chose those web trends, innovations, web ideas and individual sites that made a major impact not just on our daily time spent surfing the web, but how we used the Internet.
