What is Facebook Places? Facebook Places is location-based service layered on top of the popular social network.
Facebook Places' Beginnings:
Facebook announced and launched Facebook Places in the summer of 2010. At the time, it was their answer to the growing popularity of Foursquare.
How Facebook Places Works:
The first screen of Facebook Places is usually a list of recent friend checkins. This is a good jumping-off point for your own check in.
Like other location-based services, users are presented with a list of venues that are nearby. Once a venue is found, they can check in. At this point, then can tag friends who might be with them or add a photo. The "Here Now" feature let's you see who else is checked into your location.
If a venue has a Facebook presence, Facebook Places does a good job of direction you to their page. This is maybe the easiest way to see their wall posts or scroll through photos they've uploaded.

Facebook Deals:
Some venues rewards users for checking in with deals, coupons or special promotions. Facebook has been hinting at the launch of a new deals program. Time will tell if this interacts at all with the deals component of Facebook Places.
Facebook Places Platforms:
Facebook Places is available on Facebook's mobile site. It can also be accessed via iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, HP webOS or Windows Phone 7 apps.
