What is MyTown? MyTown is a location-based service that adds a gaming layer on top of visiting real-world venues.
MyTown's Beginnings:
MyTown launched in late 2009 and comes from the minds at Booyah, a company focused on creating mobile entertainment that interacts with the real world.
How MyTown Works:
MyTown took the gaming concept of Foursquare and pushed it to the max. They essentially used the ideas that made games like Farmville wildly successful, applied it to real life and made the world a big game of Monopoly. This resulted in over 4 million users as of Spring 2011.
Like other location-based services, users can check into nearby venues. Checking in earns users "cash," or in-game currency they can use to "buy" their favorite locations. This turns the user into a landlord, as they can then rent out the business and collect more case.
Some argue that this gaming approach makes the app more fun than useful.

MyTown Platforms:
MyTown is currently only available as an app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The company plans to extend to additional mobile platforms, but there is no specific timeline.
