What is Gowalla? Put simply, Gowalla is a location-based service that helps users keep track of and publicize their visits to real-world venues.

Gowalla's Beginnings:

Josh Williams and Scott Raymond launched Gowalla in 2009 after getting their feet wet with an app on Facebook called PackRat. The service really took off after winning the top prize in the Mobile category at the 2010 SXSW Interactive awards.

How Gowalla Works:

The service uses a passport and stamp metaphor to keep track of the various locations you've visited. The traveling theme is more than just a gimmick, though. They've partnered with National Geographic, Disney, USA Today and others to curate trips to complete. The service also stands out by allowing users to upload photos of their check ins.

Users check into various locations, or Spots as they're called by Gowalla. Upon checking in, users may discover virtual items or rewards. In some cases, these can be redeemed for real-world rewards.

Gowalla Platforms:

Gowalla is available on for Android, BlackBerry, iPhone and Palm's webOS. The service can also accessed through an iPad app and the mobile Web. Recent updates to the iPhone and Android apps allow for Gowalla updates from Foursquare, Facebook Places, Twitter and other location services.
