What is "Open Source"?

Definition:

Open source refers to releasing the source code to an application, usually with the intent that others can freely edit and use the source code so long as they also release the source code with their changes.

The thought behind open source is that applications can evolve as fast or faster through community input as through commercial drive.

Examples:

A common example of an open source project is the Linux operating system.
