How To Use Del.icio.us

By , About.com Guide

Del.icio.us is a great site for those of us that like to bookmark interesting websites and articles we find on the web. I often have to reorganize the bookmarks on my web browser because I fill it up so much that I end up scrolling down the list to find the website I want.

Instead of cluttering up the bookmarks in my web browser with these websites I may only use for a short time, I can save them to del.icio.us with the click of a button and get back to them relatively easy.

This allows me to save my browser bookmarks for those sites I visit on a regular basis like Yahoo, Google, etc.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
  1. If you have not already done so, you need to register an account and download the toolbar extension. Del.icio.us has made this very easy, and you shouldn't have any problems.

  2. To save a bookmark, just click the TAG button on your toolbar. If you aren't signed into del.icio.us, this will pop up a window asking you to sign in. Otherwise, it will pop up a window asking you to input notes on the website and some tags for the website.

You don't need to type in any notes unless you want to, but it is important to pick out a descriptive tag. At first, tags aren't that important because you can just scroll down your list of bookmarks, but once that list becomes too long it is easier to use the tags to find the website.

  3. To go back to the website, just click the del.icio.us button. This will take you to your personal page on the del.icio.us site and list the websites you have bookmarked. Your tags will be listed on the right hand side, and clicking on one of your tag words will list all the websites you have tagged with that word.

Tips:
  1. When you tag a website, pick out something descriptive, but also pick your own tag for the website. Don't think in terms of how someone else might describe it. Tags are for you. If you wouldn't ordinary describe a site as 'satire' then don't. Put in 'humor' or 'funny' or whatever word you would use for it.

  2. When appropriate, use multiple tags for a site. This allows you to create sub-categories like 'humor satire' and 'humor silly'.

  3. You might notice a 'related tags' area coming up after you clicked on a tag. If you have added some websites with multiple tags like 'humor satire' and 'humor silly' this will create related tags. If you click on 'humor' it will list out all the websites tagged humor and the related tags 'satire' and 'silly' so you can narrow down your list.
