How to Change Your URL on Every Major Social Network

Set up a custom URL to help people find you

What to Know

  • Facebook: Go to Account and select Settings & Privacy > Settings. Next to Username, click Edit. Change username and save changes.
  • YouTube channel: Go to YouTube Studio > Customization > Basic info. Select Set a custom URL for your channel, customize, and publish.
  • X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest: Your URL is linked to your username. When you change your username, the URL changes.

This article explains how to change your URL on Facebook and other major social networks. Knowing your profile URL and sharing it with friends makes it easier for them to find you on social media.

Create Customized URLs on All Your Social Profiles

Not all major social networks automatically create profile URLs out of your full name or username by default when you sign up.

Exceptions: X, Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest

When using X, Instagram, and Pinterest your URL will always be: (service).com/username.

When you change your username on any of these social networks, your URL automatically changes.

Ones You Can Change: Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn

Some of the most popular social networks don't set up your profile URL for you by default, using your full name or username. For example, Facebook started notifying users that they could change their profile URLs years after it launched.

Look at the URLs of your Facebook profile, Facebook pages, YouTube channel, and LinkedIn profile. Snapchat makes it possible for users to share their usernames with new contacts, so you should consider looking into that, as well.

Why Streamline Your Social Profile URLs

Customizing your social profile URLs can make your profiles more discoverable. A couple of benefits to changing your URL are:

  • Give new contacts an exact URL to connect with you. Then you don't have to tell people "look me up on Facebook" and force them to play a guessing game of which profile is yours. You can say, "my profile is facebook.com/myname," and they'll find you on the first try.
  • Rank in the search engines for your name. When somebody searches for your full name or your business name in Google, your profile is more likely to come up as a top result if its URL also includes your full name or business name.

Change Your Profile URL (Username) on Facebook

Let's start with changing your Facebook profile URL.

You can also visit facebook.com/username and click Edit Username to change it.

  1. Sign in to your Facebook account and click the small downward arrow icon in the upper-right corner.

  2. Choose Settings & Privacy in the menu that drops down.

  3. Select Settings.

Your URL displays as facebook.com/[username]. Enter your password to confirm the change.

Unlike other social networks, many of which allow you to change your username whenever you want and as many times as you like, Facebook only allows you to do it once. So think carefully about what you want your username and URL to be because you can't change it again.

Change Your Page URL on Facebook

Now let's take a look at how to change your URL for a public Facebook page.

  1. Sign in to Facebook and choose Pages in the left sidebar.

    The page URL becomes www.facebook.com/[Username].

Like Facebook profile usernames and URLs, you can only change your Facebook URL once. Make sure you want the username you chose because it's impossible to change it later if you decide you don't like it.

How to Change Your Channel URL on YouTube

Depending on when and how you set up your YouTube channel, you may have a custom channel URL without knowing it.

  1. Sign in to YouTube and select your profile photo in the upper-right corner.

When you have a custom URL for your YouTube channel, you can't change it or transfer the URL to someone else. However, YouTube allows you to remove the custom URL and claim a new one.

How to Change Your Profile URL on LinkedIn

Changing your LinkedIn URL is relatively easy, and you're allowed to change your URL up to five times over 180 days.

How to Share Your Snapchat Username URL With New Contacts

While you can't exactly plug a Snapchat URL into a web browser to see a user's profile, you can share a link through the app to make it easier for new contacts to add you.

  1. Open the Snapchat app and tap your avatar in the upper-left corner.

  2. Tap Add Friends. Select More in the Share My Snapcode section to see all the ways you can send your Snapcode.

  3. Select an app or method to share your username, such as X, Facebook Messenger, text message, and email.

  4. Snapchat automatically pastes the link to your username in your message. Enter the recipient's address or contact information and send.

When new contacts see the link from your post or the message you sent them, they can tap it from a mobile device, and it prompts their Snapchat app to open a preview of your profile so that they can add you.
