So you’ve joined Instagram, but maybe you’re not quite sure how you should dive into this weird, mobile photo-sharing app. Not to worry! We’ve got you covered.

Here are some of the most popular ways people are using Instagram. Follow these trends and you’ll be an Instagram pro in no time.

Find People to Follow

Instagram is about photos, but it’s also about interaction. When you first sign up, the app will ask you if you’d like to find friends already on Instagram in your existing networks, like Facebook or Twitter. Using the Explore tab is also a useful way to discover new and popular users to follow.

Use Hashtags

Hashtags are a pretty big deal on Instagram. You can actually attract more followers, likes and comments to your photos just by adding as many relevant hashtags you can think of to the photo description before you post them. For example, a photo of a dog could include: #pets, #dogs, #germanshepherd, #love, #animals, #cute and so on.

Since people are actively search through tags on Instagram, it’s almost impossible not to be discovered by other users. You can check out some of Instagram’s most popular hashtag trends right here.

Take Selfies

For those of you who don’t know, a selfie is a self-take photo of yourself. Selfies thrive and flourish on Instagram. People love them, and you don’t have to feel ashamed of taking as many selfies as you want using this app – because everyone else does it too.

Experiment with Photo Filters

Instagram has a whole bunch of interesting photo filters you can apply to instantly transform any photo into a work of art. Whether you want an aged look, a lighter look or a black and white look, Instagram’s got it. Here’s a brief breakdown of how you take advantage of each individual Instagram filter to make your photos look perfectly stunning.

Use Location Tagging

Instagram gives you your very own photo map that you and your friends can look at to see what places in the world you’ve visited and where you took your Instagram photos. Check the “Add to Photo Map” box before you post your photo, and then you can add an optional “Name this location” name as well.

Instagram uses data from the popular location-based app Foursquare to add location names. All you have to do is start typing the name of a location and select the one you want from a pop-up list that appears. The location will then be tagged to the photo.

Focus on Food, Pets and Sunsets

If you spend enough time on Instagram, you’ll start to notice some big photo trends. Selfies sure are a popular one, but so are pictures of food, pictures of dogs and cats, and picture of sunsets or the outdoors.

Go ahead and try an experiment. Take some photos of delicious food or a beautiful sunset and start adding as many hashtags as you can come up with before posting it. You’ll almost be guaranteed to attract interaction from other users.

Post Instagram Photos on Other Social Networking Sites

Last but not least, another great way to find more followers and get more likes or comments is to post your Instagram photos to other social networks. Instagram lets you do this automatically to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr.

You only need to allow Instagram to access your other social accounts once, and then you can post away. Simply tap the social network in the “Share” section before you post a photo on Instagram to have it automatically posted to Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr/Flickr.

That’s it. Now you’re one of the pros. Happy Instagramming!
