Cinemagram is an iOS app that you can use to animate your photos. The end result is a cross between a photo and a video. (A GIF, basically.) You use the app to film a short video with your iPhone’s camera, and then the app asks you what part of the photo you want to be animated.
For example, a short video taken of the wind rustling through a tree would make a good cine. You could choose to make all of the branches move throughout the whole animation, or select as little as one branch to be animated.
It’s actually really cool to see a mostly static photo with a small section that’s been animated. You can check out some the best trending cines here to get a glimpse of how people are using Cinemegram.
Android users will have to wait for this one. It’s only available for the iPhone right now. You can download it for free from the App Store.
The app interface closely resembles Instagram, and is built similarly like a social network. The main “friends” tab displays a scrollable feed of cines posted by your friends. When you first sign up for a Cinemagram account, the app will automatically connect you to any friends who are already using it.
Capturing and Creating a New Cine
Creating your first cine goes beyond simply snapping a photo and posting it. The app wil ask you to film a short video by tapping the record button. Once you’re finished recording, you can choose the section of the video you want as the cine. The time limit for each animated cine is about 2 to 3 seconds.
After selecting the section of the video and pressing “Next,” the app will ask you to draw using your finger on the section that you want to be animated. The rest of the GIF will remain still. As mentioned previously, you can use your finger to select the entire video for animation or just a small section.
You can edit it as many times as you like before you permanently set the animation. You can even alter the size of the selection paint brush and the speed (slower or faster) of the animation. Like Instagram, vintage filters can be added to finish it off.
Social Networking with Cinemagram
Because Cinemagram is built to be a social network of its own, other users in your network will be able to see your new cines in their friend feed. You can “like” friends’ cines and leave comments, just like Instagram.
Before you publish your cine, you can also add a title, tags, a location, and share it on popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. You have profile that you can edit within the app, where you change or update your picture, username, website and bio.
Visiting the “activity” tab will show you all the interaction from your followers. The “explore tab lets you look through cines and find new users to follow.
Cinemagram and the Rise of the GIF
The Cinemagram team experienced wild success in 2012. One of the fastest moving trends online is the animated GIF, and it's not showing any signs of slowing down.
Sharing GIFs on sites like Reddit and Tumblr is huge right now, and Cinemagram offers users a simple way to create their own through a simple app. It offers us all nice way to incorporate video-like features into static photos without needing film and post an entire video.
