2012 was an excellent year for Kickstarter. The popular crowdfunding site managed to triple the amount pledged in 2011 from project backers to over $320 million in 2012.
If you're familiar with how Kickstarter works, you probably know that not all projects succeed and backers don't get charged for their amount pledged when a project doesn't reach its funding goal. Still, of the $320 million pledged, about $274 million went ahead toward funding over 18,000 successful projects.
Over 2.2 million people pledged money to a Kickstarter project last year. Were you one them? I was. I decided to back this nifty Amplifiear speaker thing built for the iPad last spring. Even though it took about five months for the project leaders to get everything organized with production and shipping, I'm happy I backed such a creative project and really like the product.
I do, however, somewhat regret deciding not to back the Ostrich Pillow project before its closing date. What a great gift something like that would make for somebody.
Kickstarter is wonderful.
