eBay Seller Launches Starting Bid Auction at $8,000 for a Single Twinkie

By November 17, 2012

On Friday, we found out that Hostess Brands, Inc.--the wholesale bakery company that makes the iconic Twinkie snack cake--was going out of business after 82 years in operation. As the news broke, some kind of melodramatic panic episode seemed to have washed over a huge part of the social web, triggering a whole bunch of eBay sellers to start listing Hostess products for ridiculous prices, calling them "Collector's Items" in the listing titles and descriptions.

This single Twinkie listed for auction has a starting bid of a "reasonable" $8,000 but other news outlets are reporting that some are being listed for as high as $20,000, and a few Hostess products have already been sold for as much as $50 to $60.

But before you even decide to stock up on boxes of the soon-to-be-rare cakes keep in mind that you can probably save a ton of money by heading out to the store and buying a bunch there before they're all gone. Canadian companies also hold the rights to Hostess brands in Canada, so Americans may still be able to satisfy their Twinkie fixes by heading north of the border if a Canadian company decides to pick up the rights to continue distributing them.

UPDATE 11/19/2012: CNBC tweeted that Hostess and Bakers Union have agreed to mediation, which would prevent them from shutting down. There may be hope for the iconic Twinkie after all.
