If there were any doubts just how important a role social media was playing in today's society, those doubts were quelched in the aftermath of Iran's election. As sentiment of election fraud grew and Iran closed the curtains to the media, the people of Iran turned to social media sites like Twitter to get the word out.

The result was so effective that the United States government asked Twitter to delay a scheduled upgrade in order to keep the lines of communication between the Iranian people and the world open. Through the various tweets and videos posted on YouTube, the entire world was able to see through the curtain the Iranian government desperately wrapped around the situation, including the horrors inflicted on the Iranian people as the government put its foot down against the protests.

Ben Parr of Mashable has done an excellent job of detailing a social media timeline of the crisis in Iran. But first, a word of warning: some of the images and videos are disturbing.
