Facebook Virus Rears Its Ugly Head (Again)

Thursday December 4, 2008

A Facebook message hits your inbox claiming that you've been filmed in a compromising and/or embarrassing way and presents a link to view the video. The link leads to site similar in visuals to YouTube, only when you get there you are are asked to download some software in order to view the video.

Boom! It's a virus.

This particular approach of using Facebook to trick people into downloading malware has popped up before in Canada and the UK. Mass High Tech is reporting that it is currently making the rounds among the Boston media.

While Facebook is looking into the issue, it is important to remember two basic things when receiving these type of messages:

(1) Links within email or other messages are to be viewed with suspicion, even when sent by friends, and especially when the destination asks for login information.

(2) Always be suspicious of websites that pop up asking you to download something to view the website properly.
