More Women Using Social Media Than Men
A couple of months ago, I was asked in our forums who used social networking sites more -- men or women. After some furious Google searching, I found that men and women under the age of 25 tended to adopt social networking sites at an even rate, but there were no specific studies on men and women as a whole.
Apparently, more than just one person was curious about the answer because Business Week recently sponsored a study about the social media habits of men and women.
The study showed that women use social media sites much more often than men with the main disparity coming in the 35 crowd. While single men tended to use social sites almost as often as women, they tended to stop using these sites once married.
However, while married men might abandon Facebook and MySpace, they did tend to still use sites like LinkedIn. The study concluded that -- to men -- social websites were a transaction. Websites like Facebook were seen as a link to women, and when a link to women was no longer needed, the website was deemed no longer useful.
Of course, this is just one of many reasons why men above the age of 35 aren't as active on social websites. For those interested in finding out more, I suggest reading the entire article. It's a quick read but has some interesting ideas on why women are dominating the social web more than men.
