A Closer Look at Yahoo

Monday March 17, 2008

With the Microsoft-Yahoo soap opera popping up in the news so often lately, I thought it was time to take a closer look at Yahoo. While Microsoft's interest hinges upon grabbing a slice of the web search market share that is dominated by Google, Yahoo is much more than just a web search engine.

Yahoo regularly ranks number one on the Alexa index which makes it the most popular web destination in the world. Besides the search capability and the news displayed on the main page, Yahoo also provides specialized content on a wide range of subjects including Games, Music, Travel, and even Star Wars.

Yahoo's most recent venture is a re-design of their popular Yahoo! Buzz site. A social news site with controlled content, popular Buzz items are highlighted on the main Yahoo page. TechCrunch has an excellent article on how Yahoo! Buzz is doing.
