Google Releases the Not-a-Wiki Wiki

Thursday February 28, 2008

Google launched a new tool called Google Sites today. Google Sites joins Google Docs, Google Calender and Google Gmail as part of the Google Apps family.

The goal of Google Sites is for anyone to be able to design a team-oriented site where multiple people can collaborate and share files and information.

Sound familiar? Well, if you think that it sounds like a wiki, then don't mention it around Google. Says Matthew Glotzbach, project management director of the enterprise group, "One of the challenges of wikis, even though working with them is easier than working with HTML, is that they're built by IT for IT, and not with the end-user experience in mind."

Google sites is designed with the idea of small teams of people collaborating on sites like company intranets, project pages, and educational classroom sites. Again, this isn't any different than how wikis are used in the workplace, but we won't tell Google that.
