Thumbs Up to Skyfire Mobile Browser, Thumbs Down to Skyfire Website
I must admit that I am excited to check out the Skyfire browser. It promises to blur the lines even more between mobile browsers and PC browsers -- a trend I see continuing until there really becomes not very much difference at all between mobile browsing and PC browsing.
The Skyfire browser promises to show ajax-based javascript, flash, and streaming video on a mobile browser just as if you were browsing from your desktop. They have a neat little demo video on YouTube to check out if you are interested.
But their website (www.skyfire.com) does bring up a pet peeve of mine. It doesn't display very well in a mobile browser. And Skyfire isn't alone on that point -- many websites with a primarily mobile-using audience seem to be geared more towards PC browsers than mobile browsers. I'd like to think they would at least create a mobile-friendly version, but, sadly, this is often not the case.
At least with Skyfire, I can see a reason why they might not want a mobile-friendly site. It might be their way of saying "Get our browser so you can see our site better!". Though, putting up a roadblock for people to actually download the browser might not be the best idea.
Okay, rant off. But feel free to leave a comment on how you feel about mobile sites that don't display well on mobile browsers.
